Moving Back to the UK from Spain
Spain has long been one of the most popular destinations for UK expats, and for good reason. The sunshine, the lifestyle, the lower cost of living. But circumstances change. Whether it is Brexit complications, family commitments, health reasons, a change in finances, or simply a desire to come home, thousands of people make the journey back to the UK from Spain every year.

Why People Move Back to the UK from Spain
The decision to return is rarely simple, and the reasons are as varied as the people making the move. Some of the most common reasons we hear from customers include:
- Brexit: Since January 2021, UK nationals living in Spain who did not register before the deadline have faced significant visa and residency complications. Many have found the bureaucratic requirements, NIE renewals, TIE cards and healthcare access, more complex than anticipated.
- Family: Ageing parents, grandchildren being born, or simply missing close family ties pull many expats back home.
- Healthcare: While Spain has an excellent public health system, access for non-residents or those without full residency can be complicated and expensive.
- Cost of living: Spain has become noticeably more expensive in recent years, particularly in coastal areas popular with expats. Some find the financial advantage has narrowed.
- Holiday home owners: Many UK owners of Spanish properties are choosing to sell or simply ship their furnishings back rather than maintain a second home abroad.
Whatever your reason, the practicalities of the move are much the same, and planning ahead makes the process considerably smoother.
Shared Load or Dedicated Vehicle?
Most people coming back from Spain are not shipping everything they own. They took a houseful out years ago and what comes home is a few rooms. That is a shared load, where you pay for the space your things occupy rather than for a whole vehicle. A dedicated vehicle is the answer where the volume is large or the dates are fixed.

Customs and Transfer of Residence (ToR) Relief
If you have lived in Spain for at least 12 consecutive months and are moving your personal belongings back to the UK permanently, you may qualify for Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief. This allows your household goods and personal effects to come into the UK free of customs duty and VAT, provided certain conditions are met:
- The items must have been owned and used by you for at least six months before the move.
- You must have lived outside the UK for at least 12 consecutive months.
- The goods must be for personal use and not for sale.
- You must apply for ToR relief before your goods travel, not after.
Relief covers a genuine transfer of your normal residence. Clearing a Spanish holiday home into a UK house you already live in is a different case, and worth raising at quotation stage rather than at the border.
To apply you complete a ToR01 form and submit it to HMRC with a detailed inventory. What Documents Do You Need?
For smooth customs clearance when moving back to the UK from Spain, make sure you have the following ready:
- A detailed, signed inventory of all items being transported. This is a customs document, not just a packing list, so vague entries cause questions and questions cause delays.
- Your passport and proof of UK address.
- Evidence of residence in Spain for the past 12 months (utility bills, rental contract, etc.).
- Completed ToR01 form if claiming Transfer of Residence relief.
- Your NIE number (Spanish tax identification number).
If you are not claiming ToR relief, for example if you are shipping items from a holiday home, standard import rules apply and VAT and duty may be payable depending on the value of the goods.

Prices start from around £1,200, and what moves the figure is the volume, the access at both ends, the level of service you choose, whether there are heavy or specialist items, how your dates sit against our scheduled runs, and where in the UK the load is being delivered. Storage When the UK End Is Not Ready
Almost nobody completes on a UK property the same week they leave the Spanish one. The Spanish sale finishes, you have to be out, and the UK purchase is still weeks or months away. That gap is the normal shape of this move, which is why every European removal includes two months of free storage at our Oxfordshire site. Tips for a Smooth Move Back to the UK
- Start paperwork early: ToR relief applications take time. Begin at least four to six weeks before your planned move date.
- Declutter before you book: The less you ship, the lower your cost.
- Book early: The earlier you get in touch, the more collection dates are open to you, particularly if you want a shared load.
- Check the access: Narrow old town streets, apartment lifts too small for furniture and rural tracks all need planning. Tell us at survey stage. Where the street needs a parking suspension for loading we will say so; booking the bay is your responsibility, though we can arrange it for a small extra fee. - Flag anything unusual: Pianos, safes, gym equipment and large garden items all travel fine, but they need to be on the inventory from the start. We do not move cars or other motor vehicles, so a car will need a specialist shipper.
- Keep essentials with you: Passports, medications, and important documents should travel with you, not in the removal vehicle.
- Notify Spanish authorities: If leaving Spain permanently, inform your local town hall (padron) and cancel your NIE registration.
