We have been doing UK to Spain removals for many years, and this particular story happened in January 2026. It was one of those days when you think you are just doing your job, nothing unexpected is going to happen — and then a police car pulls up with two officers who look ready to reach for their batons, and from the expression on their faces, they are absolutely convinced they have just caught robbers in the act.
I am glad this happened in Spain and not in certain other countries where the police don't ask questions first.
Removals to Madrid — Why the City Is Different
If you've looked into removals to Madrid, you'll know the city presents a unique challenge, as do many European capital cities. The historic centre — Malasaña, Lavapiés, Chueca, the old streets around Gran Vía — was not built with large road trains in mind. Narrow one-way streets, low archways, resident-only parking zones, and strict traffic restrictions mean that getting a full-size lorry to the front door simply isn't always possible.
As a professional UK removal company, we don't make problems — we make solutions. This is why we take a smaller van with us on every Spain run. When we can't park directly at the property, we park where we safely can and complete the delivery using the van, whether that's a busy street in Madrid, a narrow lane in Estepona, or an awkward hillside address in Granada. We have a solution for every situation, not the other way around. The customer gets their belongings delivered to the door. Clean, planned, professional.
On this particular January afternoon, that's exactly what we were doing.

The Mercedes Sprinter travels inside the trailer — this is how we get your belongings to your door in Madrid city centre.
The Transfer
We found a quiet industrial area on the outskirts of Madrid — plenty of space, good access, away from the narrow city streets. It was perfect for unloading the Sprinter from the trailer and loading it up before heading into the centre.
What we didn't account for was how it must have looked from the outside. When we arrived back from the first delivery run, with the light starting to fade, there we were: two men, a large lorry with a trailer, and an unmarked white van — at the time it had no livery on it, though it has since been fully sign-written — being systematically emptied just before sunset. The area had industrial CCTV cameras, which was actually one of the reasons we had chosen it — we had nothing to hide.
The problem is that what we were doing looked almost identical to what organised lorry theft gangs do across Europe. These gangs are very active near larger cities — they rob lorries overnight, drain fuel tanks, cut curtains, and steal drivers' personal belongings.
So when someone watched what we were doing, decided it looked suspicious, and called the Policía Nacional — they did exactly the right thing. We don't blame them one bit.
Batons Out
They arrived quickly. Batons out. Ready for action.
For approximately ten seconds, this was genuinely quite tense.

Then we showed them the paperwork: the CMR documentation, the customs paperwork, the inventory, the customer's name and delivery address in Madrid, and the UK operator licence on the lorry.

The officer checks the CMR and customs paperwork. The penny is about to drop.
The penny dropped. Two removal men from a UK removal company doing a furniture delivery to a Madrid flat. Not quite the criminal operation they were expecting to bust.
To their absolute credit, the officers were completely professional, polite, and — once it was clear what was happening — pretty good-humoured about the whole thing. They checked everything thoroughly, asked sensible questions, and left us to it. The delivery went ahead, the customer got their furniture, and nobody went to jail.
What the Transhipment Van Actually Is — and Why It Matters for Your Move
If you are researching removals to Spain and looking specifically at Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, or any other city with restricted-access streets, this story is directly relevant to your move.
Not every removal company doing UK to Spain removals has a proper solution for city-centre delivery. Some will get your belongings to a nearby street and leave you to manage the rest. Some will attempt to bring the lorry in and discover too late that it doesn't fit. Some will charge extra for access problems they should have planned for from the start.
At Gentlevan, the transhipment van is a standard, built-in part of how we handle Spain removals to cities. It's the reason we bring both vehicles on every Madrid run. Whether you are booking a dedicated load or a part-load removal to Spain, city access is already factored into the way we work.
What We Learned from the Madrid Incident

The Sprinter now carries full Gentlevan livery — nobody is calling the police on a van advertising its own website.
Our Sprinter now carries full Gentlevan livery — company name, website, UK and Spanish flags. Nobody is calling the police on a van that is advertising its own website on the side.
We also choose our transfer locations more carefully now. Not because we have anything to hide — but because looking professional matters just as much as being professional, especially when you're a UK removal company operating on Spanish soil.
