If you are relocating to Oxfordshire, who knows — you might end up bumping into one of these famous faces in the village pub, on a Cotswolds country lane, or browsing a farm shop on a Saturday morning.
Here are seven A-listers who have made Oxfordshire their home — whether full-time or as a much-loved occasional retreat — together with practical tips on moving into the villages where they live.
Jeremy Irons — Watlington, South Oxfordshire

The multi-award-winning English actor — Oscar, Tony, Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG winner — has multiple residences, including one in South Oxfordshire. Irons' iconic Hollywood films include Reversal of Fortune, The Lion King, Betrayal, M. Butterfly, Die Hard with a Vengeance, Justice League, Margin Call, Lolita, and most recently the Apple TV+ series Munich Games and the BBC remake of The Borrowers.
On stage he has brought to life memorable characters like Professor Higgins in My Fair Lady and King Arthur in Camelot.
For more than 35 years, Irons has called Watlington home, fully embracing the Oxfordshire way of life. True to the county's community spirit, he is actively involved in local initiatives — including co-founding Watlington Welcome, a volunteer group focused on community support. One of their recent efforts saw them refurbish and secure an empty property to provide a home for a Ukrainian refugee family.
Moving to Watlington or the South Oxfordshire villages? Watlington sits in the Chilterns AONB with narrow High Street access — exactly the kind of village where you want a removals company that has worked the local lanes before. Gentlevan Removals is just up the road in Banbury and we know the access challenges of every South Oxfordshire village.
George and Amal Clooney — Sonning Eye
While George Clooney and his human-rights-lawyer wife Amal split their time between several homes — including a Provence estate, Villa Oleandra on Lake Como, and a New York apartment — Sonning Eye is their English base, and the one where they host family and friends in style.
Their residence, known as Mill House, is a 17th-century Grade II listed mansion on Mill Island in the River Thames at Sonning Eye, at the very southernmost tip of Oxfordshire. The property spans approximately 5.5 acres and includes ten bedrooms, eight bathrooms, original mahogany floors, intricate Georgian mouldings, and a circular bow window in the drawing room overlooking the Thames.
Since acquiring the estate in 2014 for around £10 million, the Clooneys have undertaken extensive renovations — adding a 60-foot swimming pool, a pool house, a private cinema, a gym, and a separate 2,000-square-foot guest cottage. The Mill at Sonning theatre and restaurant sits right next door, which the Clooneys are reportedly regulars at.
Sonning Eye is technically in Oxfordshire, just across the river from Sonning village in Berkshire — a frequent source of confusion for satnav and removals companies alike. Anyone moving in or around the Oxford / South Oxfordshire area will know how restricted the riverside lanes can be — narrow bridges, limited turning space, and access often requiring a smaller transhipment van rather than a full lorry.
David and Victoria Beckham — Great Tew

David and Victoria Beckham own many homes, one of which is in the idyllic Cotswolds near Great Tew in West Oxfordshire. Fans caught glimpses of their stunning countryside retreat in the Netflix docu-series Beckham.
Often dubbed the "Beckingham Palace" because of its grand scale, this farmhouse-inspired property perfectly blends traditional charm with modern luxury. Timeless features like huge glass doors opening onto the gardens, a hand-built rustic kitchen, and their own apiary (David has become a serious beekeeper) give the home a quintessentially English feel — while the expansive grounds, ornamental lake and lavender fields add to its allure.
Known for their chic yet private lifestyle, the Beckhams use this home as their serene country escape, entertaining family and friends in style. The hamlet of Great Tew is part of the same Chipping Norton set of Cotswold villages that also draws the Clarksons, the Camerons, and a who's-who of the British creative establishment.
Want to live in the Beckhams' neighbourhood? The whole Great Tew / Chipping Norton area is famous for Cotswold-stone period homes, picturesque pubs, and notoriously narrow lanes that require careful planning on moving day. Gentlevan Removals runs regular removals in Chipping Norton and the surrounding villages — Great Tew, Charlbury, Enstone, Hook Norton, Churchill and Kingham are all familiar territory.
Jeremy Clarkson — Diddly Squat Farm, Chadlington
British TV presenter and journalist Jeremy Clarkson is one of Oxfordshire's most visible residents. His Amazon Prime series Clarkson's Farm features his farming life at Diddly Squat Farm, the 1,000-acre estate near Chadlington in West Oxfordshire, between Chipping Norton and Chadlington proper. The show has helped viewers across the world fall in love with the English countryside — and brought genuine traffic chaos to the area along the way.
Clarkson's Farm became the most-watched Amazon Prime original series in the UK after Series 2. Series 4 premiered on 23 May 2025, and a fifth and reportedly final series is set to premiere on 3 June 2026. The farm shop, run by Clarkson's partner Lisa Hogan, now opens six days a week (Tuesday–Sunday) and continues to draw crowds; the wider Clarkson empire — including his Hawkstone Brewery — saw revenue rise from £7.8 million in 2024 to £21.3 million in the year to March 2025.
In 2024 Clarkson also opened The Farmer's Dog pub in Asthall near Burford — about 25 minutes' drive from Diddly Squat. The pub already employs around 146 people and has become a destination in its own right. If you're house-hunting in the area, plan around the Diddly Squat traffic on weekends — particularly Saturdays.
The farm itself sits in a triangle bounded by Chipping Norton, Chadlington and Burford. If you're looking to move into the area, our Chipping Norton removals service covers all the surrounding Cotswold villages, and our Witney removals team handles the corridor down to Burford and Asthall.
Florence Pugh — Oxford & Witney
Hollywood actress Florence Pugh's family hails from Oxford, and she grew up between the city and the hamlets of the Cotswolds. She attended Wychwood School in Oxford, then St Edward's School, and famously also Cokethorpe School in Witney for a couple of years. As a teenager she even worked in her father Clinton Pugh's Oxford restaurants.
The Oscar-nominated star of Lady Macbeth, Little Women, Midsommar and The Wonder has more recently appeared in Oppenheimer (2023), Dune: Part Two (2024), We Live in Time (2024), and Marvel's Thunderbolts* (2025) — where she reprised her role as Yelena Belova and performed her own stunt jumping from the top of the Merdeka 118 skyscraper.
While she now primarily lives in Los Angeles, Pugh has remained deeply connected to her Oxfordshire roots. Her grandmother still attends her events, and the whole family — including her brother Toby Sebastian (Game of Thrones) and her sister, actress Arabella Gibbins — turned up to the London premiere of Thunderbolts*.
Moving into Oxford or Witney? We do plenty of both. Our Oxford removals service covers the city and its surrounding villages, while our Witney removals team serves Cokethorpe, Eynsham, Long Hanborough and the wider west-Oxfordshire corridor.
Philip Pullman — Oxford
Named by The Times as one of the 50 Greatest British Writers since 1945, author Philip Pullman is another of Oxfordshire's most beloved residents. He was knighted in 2019 for his services to literature, and a BBC poll ranked him the 11th most influential person in British culture.
Many of his works — including the His Dark Materials trilogy and its follow-up The Book of Dust — are set in and inspired by Oxford. Pullman studied at Exeter College, Oxford and has lived in and around the city for most of his adult life. He has spoken about loving to come into town inconspicuously via the quietness of the Oxford Canal, enjoying its scenery and history without fanfare.
The HBO/BBC adaptation of His Dark Materials — filmed partly on location around Oxford — brought a wave of new visitors to spots like the Bodleian Library, the Botanic Garden, and Jericho. If you're considering an Oxford move yourself, our Oxford removals team knows every neighbourhood from Jericho to Headington and can plan the right access for narrow college lanes and listed period homes.
Tim Burton — Mill House, Sutton Courtenay (Now For Sale!)
Director Tim Burton and his then-partner Helena Bonham Carter bought Mill House in Sutton Courtenay in 2006 for around £2.9 million. The property has remarkable historical ties: it was built in 1741 to house the foreman of an adjacent paper mill commissioned by the Bank of England to produce hard-to-forge banknote paper. Even more personally, it was acquired in 1917 by former UK Prime Minister Herbert Henry Asquith — the 1st Earl of Oxford and Asquith — who was Bonham Carter's great-grandfather. Buying Mill House brought the property back into the family.
Known for his unconventional style, Burton added his own touches to the property after Bonham Carter moved out following their 2014 separation. The estate's sprawling 8-acre garden (sometimes reported as 17 acres including river frontage and three private islands on the Thames) once featured hand-painted dinosaur statues, including a 25-foot T-Rex.
Big news for fans: in 2025 Burton listed Mill House for sale at £4.5 million through Savills. So if you have ever fantasised about owning a piece of Hollywood, prime-ministerial and Bank-of-England history all rolled into one Georgian estate on the Thames — now is the moment.
If Tim Burton can move out of Oxfordshire, anyone can move in. Whether you are buying Mill House yourself or simply relocating into the Sutton Courtenay / Abingdon corridor, our Oxford removals team will handle the move with the same care a Grade II listed Georgian property deserves.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best villages to live in Oxfordshire?
It depends what you're after. Cotswold-stone period homes are concentrated around Chipping Norton, Burford and Charlbury. Riverside Thames living means Sonning Eye, Goring and Henley-on-Thames. For commuter-friendly market towns, Banbury, Bicester and Witney all offer fast rail links to London. Whichever you settle on, our Oxfordshire removals team covers the whole county.
How much does it cost to move within Oxfordshire?
Costs depend on your home's size, the distance involved and which services you need — packing, storage, dismantling and so on. A 2-bedroom flat move within the county typically costs less than a full 4-bedroom house relocation across the Cotswolds. Do you handle rural and Cotswold-village removals?
Yes — it is one of our specialisms. Narrow lanes, tight corners, limited turning space, and listed-building restrictions are all familiar territory. Can you move pianos, antiques and high-value items?
Absolutely. We have moved hundreds of upright and grand pianos, as well as antiques, art, safes and other high-value items. See our piano removals page for the full specialist service, and ask us about MoveProtect Enhanced Liability cover for added peace of mind.
I am moving out of Oxfordshire to Europe — can you help?
Yes. We run regular shared-load and dedicated services from Oxfordshire to Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and beyond. Full customs paperwork and door-to-door delivery. See our European removals service for the full overview.
