What You Need to Know About Customs Regulations When Moving to Spain
Spain is a popular destination for many UK citizens, whether for work, study, or retirement. Its Mediterranean climate, beautiful scenery, rich culture and cuisine, socials and siestas, work opportunities, relatively affordable cost of living and good quality of life are some of the top reasons why living in Spain as an expat appeals to many Brits.
Ready to say “hola!” and start your new life in Spain but not sure how to move your belongings? Here’s a helpful guide on what you can and can’t bring with you, plus what the entire process involves.
Planning Your Big Move? We Got You!
Aside from securing your visa and other residence requirements, you also need to plan and navigate the logistics of your move. We recommend first packing your important documents and necessary personal items for your first few weeks. You can then ship off the rest of your personal and household items via a reliable moving service provider. This way, you can travel light without leaving behind your essentials.
At Gentlevan Removals, we provide comprehensive door-to-door removal services to and from Spain. This involves taking care of all the heavy lifting and legwork of packing, shipping, or sorting your stuff and guiding you with the paperwork.
Shipping your items to your new residence in Spain also entails dealing with their customs regulations. This is where you can leverage our expertise in handling customs procedures and transport regulations. We help ensure the process is not overwhelming for you!
Here’s everything involved:
Proper Declaration
Whether you're bringing your items as part of your flight or through a shipping service, not all belongings are allowed into Spain. It's crucial to familiarise yourself with the requirements, prohibitions and restrictions in Spain before you start packing.
Spanish customs authorities follow strict protocols, so it’s important not to overlook their regulations to avoid any inconvenience. To streamline the process, be sure to provide accurate details of the items you're shipping, including the correct description, quantity and value.
You are also required to include a detailed description of goods that are not older than six months. This information should be translated into Spanish and authorised by the Spanish Consulate in the UK. If you fail to do this, you risk possible delays or added costs and taxes.
Post Brexit Restrictions
Citizens of non-EU countries are subject to more restrictions on the value and quantity of the goods they are shipping to Spain. Post Brexit, shipping personal items and luggage are generally not subject to customs or taxations except where restrictions are applied. For instance, the shipment of non-commercial items by air or sea freight, like perfume, tea, appliances, etc., is subject to taxation if their total value exceeds the €430 limit.
Required Documents
When it comes to documentation, Gentlevan Removals will guide you with what you need to prepare and how to prepare them for your move. The required documents include:
- A detailed packing list including the total number of items, weight, and value.
(No worries, we can create this list for you!) - A utility bill or council tax bill as proof of a UK address, dated within the last 3 months.
- A copy of the Spanish property purchase agreement or rental contract is needed.
- A copy of your Passport or NIE.
- A signed and dated authorisation from you as a customer.
(We'll provide this form once you book with us.)
To Avoid VAT (IVA) Payment, Customs Inspectors Require the Following Documents:
- Your T.I.E. Residency Card for Spain.
- A "Padron" certificate dated within the last year.
- Form P-85 from HM Revenue & Customs.
Restricted Items
- Alcohol and Tobacco: Limited quantities may be allowed. Check customs regulations for specific allowances.
- Food Products: Fresh produce, meat, dairy, and plants are generally restricted or require special permits.
- Medicines: Prescription medications must be accompanied by a valid prescription. Some drugs may require special authorisation.
- Cultural Artifacts: Items of historical or cultural significance may need special clearance or permits.
- Large Quantities of Cash: Amounts exceeding €10,000 must be declared.
Prohibited Items
- Illegal drugs and substances.
- Firearms and Weapons.
- Hazardous Materials: Items such as flammable liquids, chemicals, and explosives
- Endangered animal products (e.g., ivory, certain animal skins).
- Obscene or pornographic materials
- Counterfeit Goods
Prescription Medicines
Prescription medicines for personal use may be shipped to Spain. However, you require a certified and translated letter from your doctor that states your need for medication. If your medication falls under the controlled drugs category, you will need approval for an import licence at the Spanish consulate in the UK.
Motor Vehicles
Motor vehicles must be at least six months old prior to importation. The document requirements are as follows:
- Certificate of Title
- Copy of passport
- Residence permit (for permanent import)
- Identification card Documento Nacional de Identidad
- Purchase invoice
- Vehicle registration
- Driver’s licence
- International Insurance Policy
- Valid licence plates
- Certificate of CIF value of vehicle in Spain
