Moving house? 5 tips to help you pack properly
When it comes to moving house, it’s a well-known fact that it’s probably one of the most stressful things you’ll ever do in your life.
Thankfully, there are steps you can take to make the process easier to manage, like packing more efficiently for example.
If you are moving home soon, we’ve put together five great tips to help you pack properly – which will hopefully make the process as easy for you as possible!
- Take time to declutter before you start packing!
Before you even begin to think of packing up your belongings, give yourself some time to do a thorough declutter. Not watched those DVDs recently, or used that gym equipment in the garage? Then get rid of them! There’s no point in paying to take items to your new property that you won’t use – and they’ll take up valuable space in the removal van too.
- Buy quality packing boxes and tape!
Before you start packing, it’s important to make sure that you have the right materials to help you do the job properly – and this means investing in good quality packing boxes. Don't be tempted to buy poor quality single walled boxes which may be a cheaper option – instead, you should ideally use strong double walled removal boxes, which will be far sturdier. In addition to this, it’s important that you use good quality packing tape too – using both of these will help to ensure that all of the contents inside the box is kept safe and secure, and it also helps to remove the risk of any breakages during transit too.
- Mark up your boxes so you know what’s inside!
Once you’ve started packing your boxes, it’s really important to ensure that you always mark the outside of them so you can keep track of what’s inside. This will help your removals team to put them straight into the right room when you get to your new property, and means that you can also find the kettle and other essential items such as cleaning equipment as soon as they start unloading too!
- Utilise all of the space inside your boxes!
When it comes to packing boxes, there are many different sizes available to you. However, the most important thing when you start to pack them is making sure that you don’t overfill them! For example, don't put the complete contents of your bookcase into the largest box. Always remember - if it’s too heavy for you to lift, then the removal team will certainly struggle too, especially if they need to carry the box through narrow doors or up staircases. It would be a much better option to use several small or medium sized boxes for books and fragile items, to avoid individual boxes getting too heavy, and larger boxes can be used to pack larger, lighter items instead.
- Don’t leave packing to the last minute!
When it comes to packing, having time to prepare is essential. Leaving packing to the last minute will mean that you are rushing to get everything sorted, and as a result, it could mean that fragile items may not be properly wrapped, boxes are overfilled, or you’ll find it hard to work out which box is which when you arrive at your new property. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to plan and prepare, and most importantly don’t rush!
